There is a single digital marketing technique that, if used properly, can be amazingly profitable. And the best part is that a little effort goes a long way. That technique is Search Engine Optimization, also known as SEO. Today I’ll show you how to successfully implement one.
As someone who has spent over 13 years running an online business, I get asked almost daily about the SEO tools I use.
Prior to building SovereignWomen.net, I didn’t have a central place to send people. I just kept making one-off recommendations in places like my Facebook Woman’s Group. And the people who follow me (like you) had no place to go to find my SEO Search Engine Optimization techniques.
I was planning on creating another course for The Economist’s Learning platform or Udemy, but I figured, I would be able to help a lot more women if I had a centralized location where I can share my thoughts, experience, and findings when it comes to SEO, especially Small Business SEO.
What is Search Engine Optimization?
“Search Engine Optimization” or “SEO” is the combination of strategies, techniques, and tactics used to increase the number of visitors to a site. The goal is to reach a high-ranking placement in the search engine results — also know as SERPs — such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, and others.
You may decide to hire a Search Engine Optimization Agency to take care of your SEO…but be warned this is a big decision. If done properly, it can potentially drive lots of traffic to your website. On the other hand, if not done properly, you run the risk of damaging not only your site but also your reputation. Make sure to research the potential advantages as well as the damage that an irresponsible SEO can do to your site. You may also want to read books like “Search Engine Optimization for Dummies” to at least have a basic SEO knowledge before hiring Search Engine Optimization Specialists.
What Makes a Good Search Engine Optimization?
After running numerous SEO projects for clients, especially for difficult vertical markets, I’ve found five best practices and simple steps to help you increase your Small Business SEO success. Think of the following steps as a search engine optimization starter guide:
Step 1. Turn everything about your business into content. It is critically important, due to the fact that the new Semantic Web considers content as its currency. Therefore the more unique your content, the more the search engines will reward you for your efforts. Be sure that you don’t overlook or bypass this, because if you fail to add fresh content to your site, the search engines will simply not push you towards the front of the SERPs.
Step 2. Optimize your website. This critical step calls for your complete attention. Here is why: Website optimization gives you control on how your website will show up in the search engines and how people will discover your business. If you are a local business, make sure you optimize for local search. The key reasons why you’ll want to do this is because 63% of consumers use search engines to research information about local companies.
Step 3. Refine internal linking. You will want to do this in order to add value to your site. Your site’s internal linking architecture is a key component of your Small Business SEO strategy. Using a silo architecture is the best way to accomplish this. Silo structured websites are really about linking thematically related pages together. The silos inter-link only at the top level, and aside from that, each silo has pages that link only amongst themselves. This creates a theme that is easily recognized by the search engines, helping you get ranked for the keywords in each silo much easier than randomly linking pages together.
Step 4. Create content with your customer in mind. To elaborate that into some more detail, if you want to get more inbound links and retain customers, you need to write for customers. Humans hate spam, and if they see that your site is only written for the search engines, they will leave and never come back.
Step 5. Write in a personal voice. Moreover, make it personal. By making your voice heard, you’re showcasing your authority in your market, and adding trust to your Small Business SEO toolbox.
Search Engine Optimization: Wrapping It Up
So…regardless of how far you are in your web building process, what are you waiting for?
My challenge to you is to start creating awesome content and start improving your website’s Search Engine Optimization in the next two weeks. I spend at least one full day every single week writing my blog posts. I personally do not outsource them or have anyone write them for me because I like to share my own experiences and that is something very hard to outsource.
